The Shady Grove West library will be an approximately 7,000 gross square foot library in the heart of the Shady Grove West Community, across from the Shady Grove Metro station. It will play a vital role in implementing the Shady Grove Sector Plan Minor Master Plan Amendment, approved and adopted in Spring 2021, by serving as a community hub, cultural center, and educational resource. The library will serve as a space for early literacy, technology, teen, and English language programming. The Housing Opportunities Commission will own the housing development that provides the space for this library through a long-term lease.

Design start in summer 2026, construction start in fall 2027, and project completion in fall 2028.
anchor Justification
Due to the building of this new community, there will be a diverse and multifaceted residential population moving into the area from outside and other parts of the county. Libraries are a vital community asset providing a hub for education, information, and community engagement. Libraries offer resources, services, and space that support residents' needs, promote literacy, and foster a sense of belonging. Libraries serve as gathering places for community members, hosting events, workshops, and programs that foster social interaction and a sense of belonging.
The Shady Grove West Library project will address the needs of a population in the immediate surrounding area of approximately 2,106 individuals (per the 2020 Census). The majority of the residents (70 percent) fall between the ages of 20 to 59. The next largest age population is that of residents ages 60+ (13 percent). In addition, the Shady Grove West Library will provide services to an expanded region of "West" Shady Grove with a population of 8,776 per the 2020 Census.
The Shady Grove West Library will fill an important gap in services as a multi-functional space for library programs in addition to its core services. This library will be a destination for unique and community tailored programs which the neighboring Rockville Memorial and Gaithersburg Regional Libraries cannot support. The Shady Grove West Library will provide flexible space where programming can be offered to rising community needs and augment programming offerings in the region.
