anchor Description
This project will provide for the installation of a Level 2 and direct current fast charging to support short- and long-term parking needs, in County-owned public parking garages in Silver Spring, providing access for residents who may not have the ability to install chargers at their residences.
anchor Justification
Adoption of electric vehicles yields many benefits, including reduced emissions and air pollution as well as lower overall vehicle and maintenance costs. However, lack of access to public charging stations can be a barrier to electric vehicle adoption. Lower income households may not be able to afford the cost of installing home chargers, and those living in multifamily housing may not even have the option to do so. Access to public charging stations, especially low-cost charging options can address this problem.
anchorFiscal Note
An $850,000 Federal earmark was awarded to the County in the 2024 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD) Federal appropriations bill. The County's required 20 percent match is supported through a $212,000 Current Revenue appropriation in this project.
