Program Description

  OBP FiberNet

The Office of Broadband Programs FiberNet program supports FiberNet operations and maintenance, provision of new applications over FiberNet, and expansion of FiberNet services to new locations. FiberNet is Montgomery County's private communications network and it enables all parts of County government and agencies to be responsive to and do business with County residents, business partners, and neighboring governments and institutions. FiberNet is a critical infrastructure asset that is comprised of hundreds of miles of fiber optic cable, hundreds of sites, and thousands of devices, and provides business-level voice, video, Internet access and data network services for Montgomery County Government, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), Montgomery College, Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC), the Maryland-National Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) and the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), as well as connectivity to and private network access to the State of Maryland and regional local government networks. The County's public safety communications are also provided via FiberNet infrastructure and FiberNet contains resiliency, back-up, and never-fail features for critical operations.

By operating as a shared physical fiber optic communications network, FiberNet eliminates spending on duplicative networks, enables commodity bulk purchase savings, and cost-effectively enables expansion and enhance of network features, including broadband connectivity to meet growing public safety communications, Cloud service, and education system demands. FiberNet collaborates with DOT so that fiber to support network as well as traffic signal controls and cameras is deployed simultaneously and cost effectively. By operating its own communications network, FiberNet can cost effectively expand capacity.
